Actor Richard Gere, while working on a new film called Franny, generated additional press in April 2014 when he made a donation to the drug and alcohol rehabilitation organization the Livengrin Foundation. According to the rehab group’s VP Scott Blacker, Gere was giving back to the local community of Philadelphia, where the actor was born. After researching behavioral health services in the region, Gere’s team selected Livengrin because of its history as a life-changing organization.
The amount of money Gere donated was undisclosed but Blacker says it will be used as charity for patients who need help with treatment costs. Richard Pine, CEO of Livengrin, called the donation “generous” and that it would help raise the issue of addiction and remind addicts that help and recovery are possible. One of the keys to recovery is knowing people care.
In the past Gere has donated to other causes such as AIDs/HIV research and human rights. He is best known for starring in blockbuster films such as An Officer and a Gentleman, Pretty Woman and Chicago. He was married to model Cindy Crawford in the early to mid 90s then eventually remarried. He began to build his film career in the 1970s with roles in Looking for Mr. Goodbar and Days of Heaven. His major breakthrough was American Gigolo in 1980.
The Livengrin Foundation was founded in 1966 and has helped over 125,000 individuals with addiction problems. It has since blossomed into nine treatment centers throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania. It’s a place where patients can turn to for a friendly supportive environment, similar to New Horizon Recovery in Encinatas, California, which provides a peaceful sanctuary for healing not far from beautiful ocean scenery. By combining classic and modern treatment and catering to individual needs, New Horizon Recovery offers a powerful road to recovery.
