Alcohol use is widely spread all over the country and throughout a variety of age groups.

In 2012, it was estimated that 17 million adult over the age of 18 had an alcohol use disorder and 76,000 youths between the ages of 13 and 17 had one. Alcohol is responsible for nearly 88,000 deaths each year.

Drug and alcohol treatment sees many of this number, but there are many more who follow treatment outside official treatment centers. With this in mind, the chance of these numbers being higher is a great possibility.

There are several different types of treatment available, medications being one of them. Let’s take a look at Selincro- a new intervention product from Danish pharmaceutical company Lundbeck:

How Selincro Works?Selincro-Drug
Selincro works on the brain’s reward system to prevent alcohol from producing the “high” that many are addicted to. By reducing the feeling that alcohol provides, people begin to want it less and less.

This gradual weakening of the pleasure provided by alcohol works wonderfully for those who want to reduce the amount they drink but may not want to quit cold turkey or quit completely.

While drug and alcohol treatment has as its goal to reach abstinence, for some people, reduction of intake is the goal.

Is It Effective for All?
If a person is going through withdrawal or needs to completely stop drinking immediately, Selincro won’t help.

For those, medications like Antabuse, which causes illness when you mix it with alcohol, are better suited. Other choices may include REVIA, which is a monthly injection that is suited for people who have difficulty complying with other medication programs.

Drug and Alcohol Treatment: Alone or Combined?
Any medication for the treatment of an alcohol use disorder is best combined with some form of behavior modification therapy to help the individual change the thinking that initiated the drinking habit in them.
